The village is located at the heart of the Peak District National Park, in one of the most scenic parts of England, surrounded by hills and picturesque countryside. A network of public footpaths gives access to river, woodland and hill walks from anywhere in the village.

Despite its rural location, the cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Derby and Nottingham are all within a 30 mile radius. There are regular bus services to Chesterfield, Bakewell, Buxton and Sheffield (details here). A half hourly bus service to Sheffield, Bakewell and Chatsworth operates from Baslow, just over a mile away.

The nearest railway station is just 3 miles away, at Grindleford, on the Hope Valley Line that runs between Sheffield and Manchester. Mainline rail services are available from Chesterfield and Sheffield, and there is an hourly train service to Derby and Nottingham from Matlock railway station (details here).
